Experience shows that most people that just ask their boss for more money are actually the weaker performers with fewer career projects. If they can earn more somewhere else as they often say, then why don't they just go instead of hanging around complaining about how they're underpaid!

Your salary is a direct reflection of the value you create for your employers. Businesses don't sell good and services to customers to make money, they actually create value and if you can help them create even more of it, then you will be rewarded overtime with greater and greater increases in salary.
