How to move a 52 tonne transformer 7km in just over 2min…

Location: Adelaide, Australia Published: 17/6/2019

SA Power Networks is South Australia's sole electricity distributor. It builds, maintains, operates and upgrades the poles, wires and zone substations that deliver power to approximately 860,000 customers.

The East Terrace Substation in Adelaide, Australia is one of the main substations servicing the Central Business Districts of South Australia's capital.

As part of improving the safety and performance of the CBD 33kV system, the substation was upgraded by replacing the transformers, new high voltage switchgear, control room, including telecommunications and control systems.

The fact that the substation is located in a heritage building built in 1924 provided additional challenges to the team.

The project duration was two years and involved more than 92 people throughout the business from engineering, construction and commissioners to energise the substation.

A critical part of the project was the installation of two 52 tonne 66kV/33kV transformers that were built in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The transportation and movement of the equipment had to take in consideration interstate and city environments, underground tunnel systems, and congested spaces to manoeuvre safely.

The transfer of the new Wilson transformers the 7km from Marleston to the CBD site in East Terrace to complete the recent upgrade was filmed and produced by Mark Rooney's Roondog Productions.

The lift was supported by Lockwood Cranes, located in Cavan, South Australia. The safe movement of the transformer was achieved by a unique skating technique that enables transport of such heavy loads into narrow spaces.
