How do you practise competently? Fix your “blind spots…”
In this series, we give you simple and compelling industry insights into all of Engineers Australia's Stage 2 Chartered Competencies that will help you prepare your Evidence Statements for assessment for that highly-prized Chartered status.
They have been prepared and condensed by Fellow Chartered Professional Engineers and Engineering Executives based entirely on their personal experience and engineering practice at the highest level of the profession in complex industrial settings.
2. Practise Competently
Practising competently basically means staying up to date but it also means constantly reviewing your performance as a professional engineer and looking for gaps and "blind spots." We've all got them we just can't see them.
That's where constructive criticism dressed up as feedback comes in. Most people hate feedback. They want praise and to feel good. The smart engineer knows better. They go looking for trouble, in a nice way! They deliberately set out to find out where their gaps are and then build a Continuing Professional Development plan to address them.
It hurts and it's confronting but it's the best way to shape a brilliant engineering career.
