“What advice would I give my graduate self?” – Sherry Tang, Nova Systems

Location: Adelaide, Australia Published: 2/10/2019

Sherry Tang studied Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Adelaide, graduating with first class honours in 2016.

Sherry is currently a systems engineer with Nova Systems after completing both its work experience and graduate development programs and has been named Defence Connect's 2019 Graduate of the Year. She is an active member of the Young Engineers Australia SA division, as Secretary in 2019 having applied for the Chair in 2020.

In this podcast, Sherry gives herself the graduate advice that has launched a stellar defence industry career in South Australia, Australia's Defence State. Like all graduates, Sherry applied for every graduate position she could. Without success. But sometimes, success comes knocking!

After committing to travel to Cambodia with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) so as not to waste valuable time waiting for the next graduate opportunity, Nova Systems advertised for work experience and Sherry landed an interview during which she told them about her ex-officio appointment to the Harry Potter Club! The rest is history.

If you're an engineering student wanting to boil success down to a few bite-sized chunks, look no further than Sherry's tale of perseverance and Carpe Diem ("Seize the Day") when it comes to each and every opportunity.

Founded in 2000, Nova Systems has been an active partner in the professional services business fore more than 15 years. Since it's inception, Nova has been proud to continually and successfully assist government and industry partners deliver some of the most complex acquisitions and in-systems projects, allowing them to export Australian know-how and innovation to the world.
